On Thursday, January 31st, the Lady Warriors took on the Yellow Jackets of Ferndale. Going into the game, senior Jenna Mertz needed 17 points to pass Rebecca Kephart and cement herself as the all-time leading scorer for girls’ basketball. Jenna has been a starter since her freshman year, scoring 172 points and getting a nice head start to her varsity career. After that, she scored 326 points her sophomore year and 390 points her junior year. This put her at 888 going into her senior season. Jenna reached her 1000-point mark on January 3rd against St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy, putting her just 164 points away from making history. From that point on, she averaged 15 points per game, putting her 17 points away from passing up Kephart. In the game, she started fast scoring 7 points in the first quarter. Then towards the end of the second quarter, Jenna hit a floater which was good enough to break the record putting her up to 1,165 points. After this, Mertz then continued to go off in the game finishing with 22 points leaving her at 1,169 points.

Head coach Justin Koleno has this to say about getting to coach Jenna’s historic career thus far “I am just fortunate to get to be here to witness Jenna’s growth and determination. Being the scoring leader is a coveted record, and it isn’t her first. It takes more than just some great games. Players with records like that have to play great consistently. COVID even made it tougher for her. We lost close to half the season in her freshmen year. It was just one more obstacle to overcome for her though. She makes a habit out of that.” The Lady Warriors have 3 more games left in the regular season for Mertz to add to the record. They then might get another crack at Bishop Mccourt who put an end to their season last year.
