Similar to the first book in the series, The Summer I Turned Pretty, this book is a coming-of-age story that combines elements of romance and drama. At the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty, the main character, Isabel Conklin (also known as Belly), makes a decision to be with someone she has always wanted, but there are consequences.
In the book before this one, Belly begins a relationship with one of the Fisher brothers, Jeremiah. However, she also has strong feelings for his brother, Conrad, the boy she has loved her whole life. This creates tension and drama throughout the second book. Belly and Conrad pursue a relationship, but it becomes difficult when they face a tragedy that strains their bond. They stop talking for a while until Conrad suddenly goes missing. Jeremiah calls Belly to inform her of this, and they both head to the summer house. Being around the boys again, Belly develops feelings for one of them.
In my opinion, this is a fantastic book. According to the author, Jenny Han, “There’s always gonna be changes here and there, so I guess you’ll just have to wait and see.” Once you read the first book, it is essential to continue with the second and third books in the series. The series is highly entertaining and will keep you on the edge of your seat, eager to know what will happen next. Like the previous book, many students can relate to Belly’s experiences and emotions. In this book, the characters explore the challenges of grieving while trying to navigate their relationships and overall well-being.
There is also a TV show based on the books. The second season premiered this year during the summer. Just like the first season and the first book, there are similarities and differences between the show and this second book. If you have watched the show, I believe you will enjoy reading the books. Books often provide more in-depth details about the characters and their stories.
