“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, directed by Tim Burton, hit theaters on September 6th. Released by Warner Bros. Pictures, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, also known as Beetlejuice 2, is the long-anticipated sequel to the 1998 cult classic “Beetlejuice”. The expectations are extremely high with such a long gap between the two films. The sequel brings all types of people back to the movie theater for nostalgia and quirky visuals, but does it live up to the original?
Winona Ryder and Micheal Keaton return for “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” as Lydia Deetz and Betelgeuse. The movie revolves around Lydia Deetz’s daughter, Astrid Deetz, played by Jenna Ortega who inadvertently opens a portal to the Afterlife. Michael Keaton brings Betelguese back to life, as the iconic character returns as more of a friend and less of a foe in the sequel. The main cast members brought originality and charm, but other cast members’ storylines, particularly Catherine O’Hare’s Delia Deetz, felt less relevant. The new cast members– Monica Belluci, Arthur Conti, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Danny Devito– are talented and well-known actors, many of whom have worked with Burton on past films, but the new characters did not have the same impact as the originals and failed to add much depth to the story. While Jenna Ortega’s role as Astrid Deetz added a much-needed character to the movie, the returning characters had more of an effect than the new characters.
Tim Burton’s signature style was on full display with the costuming, music, and dark humor. But it was most noticeable in the set pieces including the miniature town of Wynter River, reminiscent of the original movie adding to the quirky and twisted style of Tim Burton.
“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” offers amazing fun and enjoyable moments for everyone, especially long-term fans, but it falls short of the original’s spirit and magic. Senior, Sarah Guglielmi says, ““The acting was splendid. I wish that there was another movie.” Overall, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” provides a unique, nostalgic experience, but will never be able to capture the charm of the original. For those interested in watching this memorable sequel, the Rowland Theater in Philipsburg is holding a Beetlejuice costume contest during the movie on Saturday, September 14, 2024.
