The blood drive date at West Branch High School has changed from Oct 31 2024 to Dec 12, 2024. This change occurred because the power was out throughout the school on the original set day. After setting up the equipment, the Red Cross staff was forced to repack everything for fear that power would not be restored in a timely manner. There were 56 donors out of the goal of 60.
Mr. Matson is the teacher who runs the blood drive. Despite his fear of needles, he continues to donate due to the nationwide blood shortage. Matson states, “I have no doubt that we would have ended up with our end goal of 60 donors, which would have resulted in WB receiving a $500 academic scholarship from the Red Cross.” The school only receives the scholarship from the Red Cross Foundation if it meets the requirements. The requirement is that there must be 30 students or volunteers as a whole signed up to donate blood. For every 30 donors West Branch gets $250.
Matson organized two blood drives last school year: one on Halloween and one near Valentine’s Day. The February drive collected over 40 units surpassing the goal. With the rescheduling of this blood drive, the risk of failing to meet the goal is increased.
The Red Cross is still in need of more donors. Since the dates have been changed there are now 55 openings for people to donate blood. It is also highly encouraged that if able, you sign up to donate Power Red. Power Red is when you donate two units of blood instead of the original one.
Food and drink are provided at the drive. These refreshments will include sandwiches, chips, cookies, and beverages. Volunteers are also needed throughout the day at the blood drive. Community service hours are given to students who volunteer. Please consider volunteering or donating blood for this meaningful cause.
