It’s that time of year again—the time when students pick their classes for the upcoming school year. From Food Chemistry to Human Biology, there are so many new and returning classes to choose from. With all of these options, it can be overwhelming, but before making your choices, there are two classes I think you should consider.
Basically, Warrior Watch and Journalism are the same class, collectively known as Media Arts. In these classes, students explore writing, photography, broadcasting, and digital arts technology. Both Warrior Watch and Journalism include tasks such as producing weekly broadcasts, writing articles, taking photos, creating social media posts, designing graphics, and contributing to the West Branch yearbook. The key difference is that Journalism earns an English credit, while Warrior Watch is an elective credit. So why should you consider taking either of these classes? As a student in both, I can share why they’re worth your time.
The class teaches way more than just what I have shared. Through the years, teachers and students have encouraged me to break out of my comfort zone and try new things. Thanks to producing several broadcasts, I now have a much better understanding of computers and the resources we use. My writing has improved due to the articles I’ve written, and my public speaking abilities have improved, too. But more importantly, the class is a community. With everyone working together on projects, students and teachers bond over thoughts, ideas, and problems, and the whole class puts their heads together to figure out just the right solution. I asked both teachers of the courses, Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Levonick, what they believe makes the class so special. Mrs. Peterson shared that, “Media Arts class lets you be creative, have fun, while having a lasting impact on the school community.” Mrs. Levonick, our other teacher, said, “This class is special because it’s student-driven rather than teacher-directed. Students have a lot of choice and autonomy to learn different programs and write about various topics. Students learn time management skills and have to set their timelines to meet deadlines.”
This class has been an inspiration to me, and I’m confident it has had the same impact on other students. With all the information provided, I believe you’ll be fully prepared to make the best choice when it’s time to select your classes.
