On Wednesday, April 9th, the NHS (National Honor Society) went on a field trip to Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. The day was filled with numerous activities and beautiful sights. Some of these activities included going to the top of the Washington Monument, touring the White House, visiting the National Museum of History, and more. The day was nothing short of spectacular.
The trip started very early, with the bus leaving at five in the morning. After around five hours of being on the bus, the club arrived at the Washington Monument at 10:00 AM to start the journey. Members of NHS had the opportunity to take a 70-second elevator ride to the top of the monument. Once arriving at the top, individuals are left with striking views. People were able to see approximately 20-30 miles in each direction. After taking everything in, students descended through the elevator and made their way to the next stop. At 11:00 AM, they arrived at the White House and began the tour. Students got to see multiple rooms inside the White House, including the red, blue, and green rooms. Also, NHS students got to spend some time viewing the scenery in front of the White House. The tour was around 45 minutes long, making every minute count. Not everyone gets to tour inside the White House, so this is a moment none of the students will forget.
After leaving the White House, the group made their way over to the National Museum of History. They were given two hours to explore anything the museum provided. Inside the museum, we ate at the Atrium Cafe for lunch. The Cafe had delicious food that everyone enjoyed. Once people were done eating, students toured all the different parts of the museum.
Shortly after leaving the museum, a couple of students got to tour the National Air & Space Museum. The rest of the students took a walk to the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. Sadly, the fountain at the World War II Memorial was not running, but this didn’t change how beautiful the memorial was. At 5:00 PM, students boarded the bus to return to West Branch.
NHS advisor Jennifer Porter organized the field trip. She shares her thoughts on the trip, saying, “We had a great day! For many students, it was the first time they had visited DC. The weather was beautiful, we got to see many of the main attractions in DC, including the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, and even got a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go inside the White House! It was a long day, but well worth it!”
