PennDOT is hosting its annual “Paint the Plow” program, a statewide contest that invites schools across Pennsylvania to participate in a unique art competition. As the name suggests, participating schools are given a snowplow to paint, and these colorful plows will later be used on Pennsylvania’s roadways during the winter season.
Each plow will be judged based on creativity and how well it incorporates this year’s safety theme: “Don’t Race, Allow Some Space.” The goal of the contest is not just to promote student expression, but also to convey important winter driving safety messages to the public. With Mrs. Steffan, West Branch’s art teacher, saying, “this contest is not about winning but bringing awareness to safe driving habits during winter times.”
Here at West Branch, the high school Art Club has already received its plow, which is now located behind the school near the band room. Leading the project is Lillian DeMoss, a 10th-grade student and the art club director. Lillian and her team have chosen to represent the theme by painting a snowplow truck spreading salt during winter, with a car following at a safe distance, directly representing the safety slogan.
More than just a contest, “Paint the Plow” serves as a creative way to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving in winter conditions, especially around snowplows. It also offers Pennsylvania students an opportunity to showcase their artistic talents while strengthening school and community spirit.
What makes this event even more exciting is that the public gets to participate, too. Community members can vote for their favorite design in the “Fan Favorite” category. It’s a fun and interactive way to show support and pride for local schools. Last year’s winner was Yough High School.
In the end, while only one plow may officially win, every student involved is a winner for bringing creativity, awareness, and unity to their community.
So don’t forget to support your local West Branch artists and vote for your favorite plow.
