On October 31, 2025, West Branch hosted a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Because the auxiliary gym was occupied with desks and chairs from the elementary school due to ongoing renovations, the blood drive was moved to the new elementary STEAM room, which is located near the nurse’s office in the elementary.
Flyers were hung around the school, and graphics were put on the WBTV broadcast with QR codes for students to sign up. Donors needed to be at least 16 years old, and anyone age 16 was required to provide a parent’s signature. Participants were advised to eat beforehand because lightheadedness can occur after giving blood. Refreshments were provided to donors once their donation was complete. Student donor Coby Kephart says, “It was my first time donating blood, and it was a very comfortable experience. The Red Cross staff were excellent, and made the whole process quick and easy. It’s such a small act that can leave a lasting impact on people. Kudos to Mr. Joe Matson and all of the student volunteers who helped put this together.”
Mr. Matson, who planned the blood drive, thought, “The blood drive went well; however, out of 49 registered donors, only 31 units of blood were able to be counted as some donors were not medically able to give, some did not show up, and some took too long (there’s a 20-minute time limit). A big thanks goes to Bella Koleno, who helped recruit students at lunch, designed the flyers hanging around the school, helped hang them up, and volunteered at our registration table on the day of the event. She will be receiving a $500.00 scholarship from the Red Cross for her efforts. Moving forward, we will possibly be hosting another drive this spring.”
Overall, the blood drive met its target, collecting 30 units of blood. Blood drives are important to communities because they ensure a constant supply of blood for hospitals, accident victims, and the management of chronic illnesses like cancer. The next local blood drive will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Clearfield, PA Tuesday, December 10, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Donors can donate every eight weeks.
