Ralph’s Majestic Vista is an entire 41.8-mile-long loop trail that is particularly beautiful in the fall, but don’t be mistaken: in the winter, with the white glowing snow on the ground and in the trees, it’s something you wouldn’t want to miss. The vista is named for Ralph Seeley, who was an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast. Ralph’s Majestic Vista offers expansive views over Bald Eagle Ridge and into Happy Valley. From the trail, you can see State College and the Tussey Mountain Ski Resort when it’s a clear day. This trail can be challenging, especially when the rocks are wet or slippery. Hikers may encounter rocky, uneven slopes, so be sure to watch your footing.
The main trail is only a little over 3.5 miles long and includes several vistas. These include “Ralph’s Majestic Vista,” “Ralph’s Pretty Good View”, along with an unnamed vista. Both named vistas honor Ralph Seeley, founder of the Allegheny Front Trail and the Quehanna Trail. Ryan Kunes, ranger at Moshannon State Forest, says, “The fall is a very pleasant time to be in the woods, not as hot or humid, fewer snakes and bugs, and as well as an opportunity to observe the beautiful fall foliage”. At mile 3.65, hikers reach the “Whetstone Hollow” Overlook. This spot can be easy to miss if you’re looking down, but it offers a place to rest and take in views of the distant mountains. The trail typically takes about 2 hours and 54 minutes to complete.
Backpacking campsites are available around mile 4.15. One site along the Allegheny Front offers a view of the farmlands in the valley below. It’s an excellent spot to take a break or camp if you’re backpacking the trail.
The easiest access point is from Underwood Road, which connects through Rattlesnake Pike from the north. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. The trail is ideal for a fall hike with scenic views and colorful mountainsides.
