West Branch graduate Chera Mason has been selected for this series of Alumni Watch for November. She is currently the elementary principal at Osceola Mills Elementary in the Philipsburg-Osceola School District.
Mason graduated from West Branch in 2000. After high school, she continued her education at Lock Haven University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in education. She later attended Saint Francis University, where she completed her graduate degree and earned her administration certification. After finishing her education, she began her teaching career as a reading specialist and later taught first and fourth grade. Each of these positions helped prepare her for her role as elementary principal.
In high school, Mason participated in basketball, National Honor Society, Student Council, and Science Club. In college, she spent time volunteering and working with children to gain experience. When asked how high school contributed to her future success, she commented, “Growing up and going to West Branch in a small community taught me the value of relationships, connection, and supporting the people around you. Everyone knew each other, so you learned quickly how important it was to communicate well, work together, and lend a hand when someone needed it. Those experiences shaped who I am and prepared me for my role as principal in a small community, where building strong relationships and creating a positive, supportive environment are a big part of what I do every day.”
Mason also shared a memory about her favorite teacher at West Branch, “My favorite teacher was Mrs. Houser, my third-grade teacher. She made her classroom feel like a family, and I always felt supported and cared for. I still remember the teddy graham bears she gave us and the hugs she shared every day. Her kindness and encouragement inspired me and are the reason I wanted to become an elementary teacher.”
Mason’s experiences at West Branch, along with her college education and early teaching roles, provided the foundation for her career as an elementary principal, where she continues to work with students, staff, and families in the community.
