Mr. Mason’s fourth-period Probability and Statistics class began the fourth marking period with the most anticipated project of the year: the carnival games project! The students were required to apply the knowledge and skills that they learned throughout the year in order to complete their projects. They applied knowledge of probability, odds, sample spaces, and of course, creativity!
Meghan Cantolina and Mariah Hayles constructed a game called Bikini Bottom Toss. It had an objective similar to cup pong, with four different colors of cups. They used a table, a tablecloth, cardboard, and tape to construct their game. Each player was required to spin a SpongeBob-themed spinner to determine how many tries they were given. For each color, there were a certain number of cups. Although the game was unsuccessful in making money, the class had a lot of fun with this game! Many people won their money back with this game, with three people sinking a ball into the ten-dollar cup!
Olivia Stavola and Lauren Timblin created a game that combined two popular games: Skee-Ball, and mini-golf. The objective of this game was to use the provided golf club to hit the ball into one of the three areas. The smallest area was worth three points, the medium area was worth two points, and the largest area was worth one point. Each player had three tries, and he or she had to score at least six points in order to win his or her money back. They constructed their game out of cardboard, styrofoam, foam, a yoga mat, and pipe cleaners. Many were unsuccessful, leaving Kaylee Wills as the lone winner!
Eleyna Hanslovan and Alex Godin constructed an original game called Toliet Bowl Toss. The objective of this game was to toss an object into a toilet bowl. The pair constructed a spinner with three different objects to throw into the toilet bowl. The objects included a roll of toilet paper, wet soap bars, and a brown ball. Each object was worth a different amount of points, with the wet soap being the hardest to get into the toilet bowl. They constructed their game out of a kitchen bowl, cardboard, paint, and a poster board. Not many people were able to sink any of the objects into the bowl, but everyone had fun playing it.
Maya Raab and Jonathan constructed a game similar to a Balloon Dart Pop. The objective of this game was to pop a balloon using plastic safety darts. They constructed their game out of cardboard, balloons, and tape. Each player had two darts to throw. Everyone in the class played their game, but only one was successful. The students had fun with this game while being safe!
Kaylee Wills and Khandyce English constructed a game based on the original Plinko board game. The theme of this game was Monsters Inc. They constructed their game out of googly eyes, cardboard, poster board, and wooden dowels. Instead of the typical Plinko chip, the duo chose to use a marble. Each player had one try to roll the ball into one of the four landing areas. The largest area had a payout of zero. The other three areas included a payout of five, ten, and twenty dollars. Many were successful in this game and won their money back.
Tyce Cantolina and Kyle Kolesar created a game based on the classic matching duck game. They added their own twist to the game by using multicolored ball pit balls with x’s on the bottom. The objective of their game was to choose two balls out of the water bin. Each person had two tries to pick a colored ball with an x on it. They constructed the game out of a plastic bin, water, a paint can, and multicolored balls. Few were winners in this game, but the whole class enjoyed something different.
This project showcased many aspects of Mr. Mason’s Probability and Statistics curriculum. Students were able to show off their knowledge and creativity by making a fun game for the class to play. All of these students worked hard for weeks on these projects and enjoyed showing them off to the class. They all had fun playing every game and using Monopoly money to pay to play. Use this as a reminder to take Mr. Mason’s Probability and Statistics class next school year!
