In addition to parades, the band has also been working on their football show this summer. According to Mr. Jones, the band is taking on one of the most difficult shows in recent history. Entitled “FUNK,” this year’s halftime show consists of three pieces that challenge and complement the band.

The band opens the show with “Play That Funky Music”. This song was written and released by Wild Cherry in 1976 but had a written arrangement by Mike Story released around 2017

The band then plays a custom arrangement by Ben Saylor of a hit song “Brass Monkey.”  This song is taken from the Beastie Boys’ album Licensed to Il, which came out in 1986. Brass Monkey also includes a drumline feature where one can hear the rapping rhythm, followed by the band yelling “Yo baby, what’s up?” Not only does this song include a drumline feature but it also includes the band front feature. Led by Mrs. Bell, the band front has put together a dance-like routine for the groove-based show.

The band closes the show with a contemporary jazz piece, “Brooklyn”, by the Youngblood Brass Band. This piece is one of the hardest songs to play from the band show, as it is a college-level piece. The band has worked hard to make this show possible, from playing college-level pieces in concert band to having adjudications –music performance assessments– with many different conductors and composers.

For the band, each previous concert and show has been to help them get to where they are right now. Marching band member, Hayden Martin says, “I think the show is going good for going into week 6. But we definitely have room for improvement, especially on Brooklyn.”

The members of the Warrior Band have worked hard to play and execute this show well. All around, the band comprises hard-working students who ensure that what they are doing has a good effect on the show and the band itself. The band is doing a great job so don’t be scared to stick around for a few minutes during half-time and watch them perform!
