Middle school guidance counselor Shayne McCusker put together a clothing closet at West Branch, which gives students access to free and gently used clothing, shoes, backpacks, and hygiene essentials for times when they may need a little extra support. The closet is available in room 110, and offers a safe and discreet space for students to select things without feeling pressure from other students around.
Students face so many challenges throughout middle school and high school, and sometimes the challenges go beyond what is seen in the classroom. Something as simple as having clean, good-fitting clothes can make a huge impact on a student’s confidence, self-esteem, and sense of belonging. The goal of the clothing closet is to help get rid of anxiety and worry that revolves around someone’s appearance, so that students can focus on what matters most when coming to school – learning, growing, building friendships, and being happy.
McCusker shares, “If we can take one worry off a student’s shoulders and replace it with a little bit of confidence and a smile or help them feel as though someone cares about them, then we are making a difference. Our clothing closet is more than a place to find clothes; it is a reminder to our students that they are seen, they matter, and they will always have people in their corner who want to see them be happy and successful.”
The clothing closet provides students with different items that can help make their school days easier. Whether someone is in need of a new backpack, extra hygiene products, or clothing for the changing weather, having these resources can make a huge difference. Because these necessities are provided, students have a place that they know they can turn to if they need extra help. This allows them to get what they need without having to worry about finding ways to afford items.
