On Friday, March 22nd, the boys’ baseball team traveled to Glendale to take on the Vikings for their first game of the season. The game was originally scheduled to be played the day before, but because of weather conditions, it was postponed till Friday. The Vikings put runs up on the board first, scoring three runs in the first inning. Then to make matters worse, left fielder Brody Rothrock ran into the outfield fence running after a fly ball and hit his face off of a pole. He had to be carted off the field by the trainer for the remainder of the inning and missed the second inning. After being looked at by the trainer, he was bandaged up and was able to play in the rest of the game. The Warriors didn’t score until the fourth inning, scoring 5 runs thanks to a three-run home run by sophomore Coby Kephart and 2 RBI double by junior Gavin Rothrock. The Warriors went on to score one more run in the fifth inning from an error by Glendale. The Warriors then added their final three runs in the 6th inning. These runs came from a base hit from Tyler Wilson and Lukas Colton, a double by Luke Liptak, and a sacrifice fly. The team finished the day with seven hits and only limited the Vikings to three hits thanks to Luke Liptak’s dominating performance on the mound. He struck out twelve of Glendale’s batters through six innings pitched. The Warriors won with a final score of nine to three to move to 1-0 on the season. Senior Luke Liptak said, “I started a little shaky and gave up a couple of hits and runs right away, but after the first inning it was lights out, and efficient with my guys in the field making some plays for me. I’m looking forward to the great things this team can do, we have talented guys all over the field and the sky’s the limit,” when asked about his performance. The Warrior’s next game is on Monday, March 25th as they travel to Harmony to take on the owls.
