Lady Warrior Softball started its season on Tuesday, March 24th. Originally, the team was supposed to have the first game on Thursday, March 19th. However, that game was postponed to April 20th. On Monday, they were supposed to play at Tyrone. Unfortunately, that game was postponed as well.
The Warriors finally took the field at Williamsburg in a strong opening for the season. Sophomore Megan Eyerly pitched, giving up only two hits, throwing nine strikeouts, a career high for her. Sophomore Lindsey Bainey hit the first home run of the season. The end score of the game was 18-0 after five innings of play.
They wrapped up the week on Thursday, March 26th, with a tight game at Mount Union. Bella Nelson scored the first run after a triple from Bainey in the first inning. The score was 1-0 until the 5th inning. Sofie McCracken scored after a double from Nelson. The Trojans then scored in the 6th inning to make it 2-1. Haley Woodling had a clutch hit with two outs in the 7th to score Nelson. Megan Eyerly pitched the whole game and only gave up one run. There were many good plays by the Lady Warrior defense that stopped the Trojans from scoring. The Warriors had a very strong offensive game as well, with no strikeouts. The final score was 3-1.
This was a week full of away games and bad weather, but the Lady Warriors made it work. Senior Haley Woodling says, “The game against Mount Union is one that the team will never forget. With only 14 total girls on the team, and only 10 being able to play in the game due to injuries and sicknesses, our team had to give it all we had. I’m really proud of how we pushed through the game when even if things weren’t going our way. Our team hit super well, and Megan did awesome pitching against a good-hitting team. Another key factor that led to our 3-1 victory was that no players struck out. I hope this win can give us momentum moving forward into the season.” Their record is 2-0 for the season, and their next game is at Tyrone on Saturday, March 28th.
